Introduction
Love:Live Music – our name for Ireland’s National Music Day on the 21st of June - is a glorious and all-inclusive celebration of live music-making in Ireland embracing all forms of music, without exception. Whether you’re into rock and pop, choral music, rhythm and blues, freestyle jazz or operatic arias, then this is for you! All of the events taking place around the country during the day and night will be FREE and open to everyone.
Ireland’s musical heritage is key to our national identity; it gives a sense of our history and also of our place within the world today. Traditional music has perhaps been the most influential style that we’ve exported, but we’re not just rooted in the past. Love:Live Music gives performers the opportunity to shine a spotlight on ‘new Irish music’ by showcasing contemporary styles, especially when collaborating with other musicians from different cultures and disciplines. The diversity of the performances illustrates the breadth of creativity across all corners of the country – not just by professional musicians, but by keen amateurs as well.
To be part of this special day there are a number of things that you can do. You could organise a gig, co-ordinate a sing-along in your local primary school, get friends and colleagues together for an impromptu musical event in the workplace, open up your choral rehearsals to your community or simply turn up and support one of the events happening in your local area. Whether you’re 9 or 90, there’s something for everyone!
You might be surprised where some of the events will happen, especially in places which aren’t usually used as music venues such as shopping centres, railway stations, public transport and work places. We’re also encouraging our biggest musical institutions such as orchestras and choirs to think outside of the box and perform in unusual locations. For those who prefer to enjoy their music indoors, many of our key venues around the country will be supporting this initiative, so keep an eye out for details in the national and local press.
Love:Live Music promotes access to live music for everyone; it underlines the importance of music within our lives, highlights the sense of well being that it gives and provides an opportunity to bring communities together, uniting them in a shared enjoyment.
We hope that you’ll join in with the spirit of the day and enjoy some great music! Find out how to get involved here.
