I love live music because…
Performance has always been and will always be the essence of music. It is true that most artists use recorded music to reach vaster audiences but very often it is only to create an opportunity to increase the amount of live performances.
What made you decide to pursue a career in music?
I discovered a piano in our house as a child and realized I could say things with it without using any words.
Can you remember your first ever live music experience?
I remember two very different musical experiences which kind of happened at the same time. The volume and the energy of a rock band...and the volume and the energy of a symphony orchestra. I was actually much more impressed by the orchestra...and I knew nothing about classical music.
Where have you found inspiration?
I find inspiration usually in listening to other musicians play live. It allows me to explore so many aspects of music that I normally take for granted...it makes me reflect on what I like, what I don't like and what I should do.
I’ve always wanted to play in....
I have a fascination with very large and resonant spaces and the challenges that they present. That's why I love to play piano in large churches and spaces with an independent live sound...sound becomes another instrument.
If you could have been present at any live music event throughout history, what would it be?
I probably would have loved to go every night for a week to listen to John Coltrane quartet play a small club.
If you could hear any one song or piece of music performed live, what would it be?
Right now I'd love to hear Stravinsky right of the spring standing in front of the orchestra as if I was the conductor. I would also love to hear Tom Waits in a small venue.
Which musicians/bands would you invite to your fantasy dinner party and why?
Once again John Coltrane (for the integrity and the energy), Claudio Monteverdi (for the beauty and the passion), Manfred Eicher (for the sound and to convince him to let me make a record for ECM).
What will you be doing on 21st June?
Playing in Temple Bar Meeting House Square for the free love:live music event, Lá Ceoil.
